  • Stories by Ron Thomson
    Documents: 10 ( Updated: Fri, 30-May-2008 )
Please click on the video link in the main menu to see interviews with Ron Thomson

Ron Thomson has, perhaps, more general African big game hunting experience than anyone alive today. He gained this experience over 25 years during his service as a game ranger in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) and his unequalled hunting stories tell of a solitary hunter in pursuit of big game quarry.
Each hunt is an epic on its own as it took place under the most free-and-fair-chase conditions possible where the quarry had access to a limitless horizon.

"He has no idea regarding the number elephants he has hunted but he believes the number exceeds five thousand. These animals were killed in protection of crops, in support of foot-and-mouth disease control operations, in efforts to stop the spread of tsetseflies, and in response to the killing of local people. Add to that another 2 500 killed on culling operations within the national parks and you will gain some measure of the extent of his experience. He has conventionally hunted somewhere in the region of 800 buffaloes, "about" 50-60 lions (including six man-eaters), and 30-40 leopards.

"In addition he headed the Rhodesian black rhino capture team for seven years and was responsible for catching and translocating some 140 of these dangerous animals. He did this by hunting them in the conventional manner and darting them with immobilising darts. His average darting distance was between 6 and 13 yards, in the densest of dense bush.
The last 100 yards of these hunts he completed in absolute silence and entirely on his own. There were no big bore rifles on hand to support him when the rhinos attacked.

"Now Ron is writing his big game hunting memoirs which will come out in several volumes. The first of these will be available next year. These books will undoubtedly be listed amongst the most important big game hunting journals ever written.
