USA Hunting : USA: East Texas woman aims to win hunting contest

on 2013/6/7 1:15:03 (902 reads)

Alex Brittingham was hunting almost as soon as she could walk.

The 23-year-old Athens native harvested her first deer when she was 4. She traveled to Africa with her father Jack and took down a Greater Kudu at the young age of 7.

Now Brittingham, whose mother Chris has Huntsville ties and attended Sam Houston State, has her eyes set on winning the 2014 “Extreme Huntress” competition for a chance to win a $25,000 hunting trip that will be featured on an episode of NBC Sports’ “Eye of the Hunter.”

She was named one of 10 semifinalists after submitting an essay and photos about her hunting expeditions. The field will be narrowed down to four finalists, who will then compete in a skills competition at 777 Ranch in Hondo in July.

The finalist will be determined through a combination of online judging by the public and judges’ scores. Folks in Walker County can help get Brittingham, who is the only Texan left in the contest, into the top four and send her to the skills contest in Hondo by voting at through June 15.

“When I first decided to enter I just thought it would be fun, and I honestly did not think I would make the top 10 with my essay,” Brittingham said. “Then I found out that there was a skills competition at 777 Ranch and I got excited. This is a chance for me to prove to myself that I am qualified to do the things I think I can do.”

Brittingham has taken down an impressive array of game animals over the years. In Africa, she has harvested a hippo, crocodile, Cape buffalo and a leopard to mention a few. She hunts white-tailed deer and elk with a bow and gun, and even bagged a black bear in New Mexico with her bow last year.

She got into bird hunting while she was attending college at Texas Tech.

“My boyfriend is a big bird hunter, but I like deer hunting more,” Brittingham said. “I like to sit and think. It is peaceful, and I enjoy it even if I don’t see a deer.”

Since graduating college, Brittingham has not had the opportunities to hunt exotic animals around the world as much as she has in the past. She is currently working as a landman, but if she had her pick, she would be a professional hunter in Africa.

If she can become one of the top-four finalist through online voting, she might get to go on safari again.

“Last year’s winner got to go to Africa, so I’m excited about that possibility if I win,” Brittingham said. “I’m not sure where the winner will get to go this year, but I don’t care because I would love to go anywhere. Hunting is what I love to do.” ... ms-to-win-hunting-contest
